Grand Lake Regattas: Probably generally the first Saturdays of July and August @ 1:30pm

competitors sailing
There are two regattas/races each summer. The first is the Saturday closest to July 4, the same Saturday as the events at the lighthouse and the fireworks.

The second regatta/race is always on the first Saturday in August - This year that will be Saturday August 6.

Sailboats of all types gather at the south end of Grand Island at 1:30. There will be two buoys set up to mark the starting line. Boats will hear a 5 minute gun and a starting gun and should begin the race at the starting gun by crossing the starting line between the two buoys. We race counterclockwise around Grand Island, 1 lap, with the finish line being marked by two buoys at the south end of the channel between Grand Island and the mainland.

Grand Lake Regatta 2012
There is no official time kept, nor is there a record of who finishes where. It is a fun race, and because we include anything with a sail, the cats will always finish first with the monohulls finishing after that and boats like sunfish/laser's etc. generally finishing after the monohulls. Race times have been as quick as about 55 minutes and as long as 2 hours depending on the winds. We have had as few as a half dozen boats and as many as 20. We always have a few "cheaters" who don't begin the race between the buoys or who jump into the race part way around the island - all in fun and a good time is had by all.
